Baseball in Mattoon

Mattoon Baseball Park

aka Mattoon Ball Park

Mattoon Baseball Park hosted Mattoon's ISL, MOVL, and MWL teams from 1947 through 1957. I have little information about this park. Although Mattoon is full of ballyards, this one was apparently demolished shortly after its last minor league game. (If you know more about this park, please Drop me a line. Thanks.)

I'm led to believe that this was the park's location. The structure on the west side of the scrap yard may be the remnant of the third base grandstand.

My thanks to Terry Winings and Ralph Carter, both of whom remember Mattoon baseball, for their comments and information. Larry Oathout of the Mattoon Public Library helped make posting the photograph a reality; Ralph and I thank him for his assistance.

The Midwest League plays Single-A, professional baseball in America's agricultural and industrial heartland. 14 teams play a 140 game schedule which begins in early April and ends Labor Day weekend.
