Illinois State League 1948

All-Star Game

All-Stars 1, Mattoon 0

Mattoon, Monday, July 12, 1948

The 1948 Illinois State League All-Star Game was played at Mattoon Baseball Park on July 12, 1948.

An All-Star team selected by a committee appointed by ISL president Howard V. MIllard defeated first-half champion Mattoon by a 1-0 score. West Frankfort's Willis McDonald was the winning pitcher for the Stars; Ben Rossman took the complete-game loss for the Indians. West Frankfort's Earl Weaver (yes, the Earl of Baltimore) knocked in Centralia's Vince Allienello in the second inning for the game's only tally.

Notes, Issues, Sources, and Mysteries

  • Based on game accounts in the Harrisburg Daily Register, the Dixon Evening Telegraph, and the Murphysboro Independent of July 13, 1948--none of which published a box score. Some information comes from the July 7, 1948, Daily Register, which listed the players selected for the game, and from the July 12 Independent, which mentioned the managers.
  • Hal Contini of West Frankfort managed the Stars; Mattoon's Chuck Hawley managed his team. I don't find any mention of coaching assistance.
  • The Indians managed to load the bases with none out in the second, but McDonald killed the rally with three strikeouts.
  • No MVP or similar award seems to have been awarded for this game.
