Midwest League 1976

All-Star Game

Iowa Oaks 5, All-Stars 3

Clinton, Monday, July 12, 1976

The 1976 Midwest League All-Star Game was played at Riverview Stadium in Clinton on July 12, 1976. A team of the league's best players, selected by the league's managers and sports writers, faced the American Association's Iowa Oaks.

The Stars' infield committed three consecutive ninth-inning errors to hand the Oaks an unearned victory in a match the writeups say the Triple-A visitors weren't taking seriously. Kurt Best was the winning pitcher for Iowa; Clinton's Mike Elders pitched well, but took the loss for the Stars.

Notes, Issues, Sources, and Mysteries

  • Based on the box score in the 1995 Midwest League Yearbook, with help from game accounts in the July 13, 1976, editions of the Cedar Rapids Gazette, Waterloo Courier, and the Des Moines Register; all had box scores, but the Courier's was exceptional. The team selections were published in the July 1 edition of the Gazette, with a update in the July 12 issue.
  • Cedar Rapids manager Salty Parker led the All-Star squad, with coaching assistance from John Sullivan of Waterloo and Bob Hartsfield of Clinton.
  • Three Clinton players--shortstop Phil Bauer, second baseman Silvano Robles, and pitcher Tom King--appeared in the game for the Iowa squad.
  • No official game MVP was selected.
  • Selected, but did not play: Jose Barrios (OF, Cedar Rapids; injured); Mitch Lukevics (P, Appleton), Russ Clark (P, Wausau), and Mike Williams (P, Waterloo).
