All-Star Game

All-Stars 5, Iowa Oaks 2

Burlington, Iowa, Wednesday, June 8, 1977

The 1977 Midwest League All-Star Game was played at Community Field in Burlington on June 8, 1977. A team of the league's best players, selected by an unannounced method, faced the American Association's Iowa Oaks.

The Stars clustered seven hits to score five times, with QC's John Harris knocking in the go-ahead run and Wisconsin Rapids' immortal Moe Hill knocking in two with a pinch-hit double. Terry Tyson scored the last run on a broken double steal. Tim Bannister was the winning pitcher for the MWL squad; Duane Shaffer took the loss for the Oaks.

Notes, Issues, Sources, and Mysteries

  • Based on the box score in the 1995 Midwest League Yearbook, with help from game accounts in the June 9, 1977, editions of the Cedar Rapids Gazette, Burlington Hawk-Eye, and the Des Moines Register; the Hawk-Eye and the Register both had box scores. The team selections were published in the June 3 edition of Wisconsin Rapids Tribune and the June 5 Hawk-Eye; umpire selections were announced in the June 2 Gazette.
  • Clinton manager Dick McLaughlin led the All-Star squad, with coaching assistance from Woody Smith of Waterloo and Dennis Menke of Burlington.
  • Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn and Hall of Fame pitcher Lefty Grove attended this game as guests of Burlington GM Dave Hersh. It seems that Commissioner Kuhn threw out the first pitch, and Lefty told stories. Ernie Banks was also scheduled to attend, but high winds in Chicago prevented his plane from leaving.
  • League President Bill Walters appointed Christine Wren umpire crew chief for the game. The papers seemed to think he was sending a message to the Commissioner.
  • It rained in Burlington. The game's start was delayed 45 minutes by the weather.
  • No official game MVP was selected.
  • Selected, but did not play: Fred Howard (P, Appleton), Luis Lunar (P, Wausau), Mickey Lashley (Clinton), Ken Schrom (P, Quad City), Steve Sherman (P, Cedar Rapids), & Doug Slettvet (C, Quad Cities).
