Midwest League 1983

All-Star Game

South 1, North 0

Madison, Wisconsin, Saturday, July 30, 1983

The 1983 Midwest League All-Star Game was played at Madison's Warner Field on July 30, 1983. Two teams of the league's best players, selected by an unknown method (likely a ballot of the league managers), faced off for league supremacy.

QC's Shawon Dunston, who'd tripled in the third, scored on a Curt Ford (Springfield) groundout to score the only run of a pitchers' "duel"--in which fourteen pitchers scattered five hits between the two teams. Mike Knox (Cedar Rapids) was credited with the win, and John Huey of QC (he also spent part of the season with Madison) got the save. Madison's Tom Conquest absorbed the loss.

Notes, Issues, Sources, and Mysteries

  • Based on the box score in the 1995 Midwest League Yearbook, with help from game account in the July 31, 1983, edition of the Cedar Rapids Gazette, which included a less-than-complete box score. The team selections were published in the July 17 edition of the Gazette.
  • Waterloo's Gomer Hodge led the South squad, with assistance from coaches Dave Bialas (Springfield) and Bruce Kimm (Cedar Rapids). Appleton manager John Boles was the Northern skipper, with coaches Brad Fischer (Madison) and R.J. Harrison (Wausau).
  • Shawon Dunston of Quad City, who hit a triple and scored the game's only run, was selected as the Most Valuable Player in a game where the pitchers permitted almost no offense.
  • Selected, but did not play: Don Groh (P, Peoria), Ben Piphus (P, Waterloo), John Young (P, Springfield), Thad Reece (IF, Madison), Scott Barnhouse (P, Wausau), Rich DeVincenzo (P, Appleton), Dan Scarpette (P, Beloit), and Mike Trujillo (P, Appleton).
