Pre-Season Profile

Manager

Tom Lawless returns to the MWL after several years as a coach in the high minors; his previous managing experience is three years at Cedar Rapids. Those teams were very aggressive on the basepaths; Tom likes to see the guys run. Bunts and intentional passes were common. Since high complete-game counts have been a feature of the Angels organization, it will be interesting to see whether Tom carries that habit to his new organization.

  • Chris Duncan (1999; 46th selection)

Where they played last season

This is a brief portrait of how the team was put together. These summaries are based on the team's opening day roster and will not be revised to reflect roster changes.

The 2000 Chiefs are based on last summer's New Jersey team, with contributions from Peoria and Johnson City.

Team League W/L Place Hitters Pitchers
                                        (Teams)
Potomac Carolina (A+) 54/85 8(8) 0 0
Peoria Midwest (A) 63/76 11(14) 5 1
New Jersey New York-Penn (A) 30/46 14(14) 8 6
Johnson City Appalachian (R+) 30/39 7(10) 3 5

Since there was very little movement in the Cards farm system last summer, only three of the new Chiefs are counted twice in this table. Two of these players have no professional experience; none have played higher than Peoria in the system.
